Mary Ellis Jarvie embraced many causes during her life, including NADFAS (The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies) headquartered in London. This international charity, amongst other endeavors – and very much like our own NSA – sponsors local lectures. She was appointed as both its Treasurer and also as a Church Recorder. She and her husband shared an enjoyment of art, architecture, and travel. Mary particularly loved English porcelain and Hester Bateman silver.

Before her marriage, she joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS) in 1941 and served until 1946 as a Chief Wren. She and a friend founded a branch of the Wrens Association in their home town of Harrogate,Yorkshire. Mary eventually became the organization’s national chairman. She received many honors, including awards from the King George’s Fund and the Royal British Legion. The Mary Ellis Jarvie Fund was established in her memory by her niece and her husband Christiane and James Valone.
